Biosolids effectiveness to yield ryegrass based on their nitrogen content Scientia Agricola
Corrêa,Rodrigo Studart; White,Robert E.; Weatherley,Anthony J..
Biosolids have been reported to increase yields and supply plant nutrients. However, complying with health and environmental standards is necessary before applying biosolids to land. Thus, sludge stabilization is required to make biosolids safe enough for their agricultural use. Side effects of stabilization processes on agronomic features of sewage sludge are not quite known, although their understanding is essential for biosolids management. Based on a model equivalent to the Mitscherlich equation, effects of the most common processes for sludge stabilization were evaluated (composting, liming, heat-drying and solar irradiation) in relation to the agronomic effectiveness of biosolids to yield Lolium perenne L. on two tropical soils, with NH4H2PO4 as a...

Carbon and Nitrogen Mineralization in Soil Combining Sewage Sludge and Straw Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Giacomini,Sandro José; Simon,Vera Lúcia Guedes; Aita,Celso; Bastos,Leonardo Mendes; Weiler,Douglas Adams; Redin,Marciel.
ABSTRACT The combined incorporation of sewage sludge (SS) and oat straw (OS) to the soil can increase straw carbon mineralization and microbial nitrogen immobilization. This hypothesis was tested in two laboratory experiments, in which SS was incorporated in the soil with and without OS. One treatment in which only straw was incorporated and a control with only soil were also evaluated. The release of CO2 and mineral N in the soil after organic material incorporation was evaluated for 110 days. The cumulative C mineralization reached 30.1 % for SS and 54.7 % for OS. When these organic materials were incorporated together in the soil, straw C mineralization was not altered. About 60 % of organic N in the SS was mineralized after 110 days. This N...

Heavy metals availability and soil fertility after land application of sewage sludge on dystroferric Red Latosol Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moreira,Rodrigo Santos; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz; Santos,Breno Régis.
Sewage sludge is the solid residue obtained from urban sewage treatment plants. It is possible to use the sludge in a sustainable way as fertilizer and as soil conditioner due to its high levels of organic matter and nutrients. Besides pathogens and volatile organic compounds, the residue may also contain heavy metals which may accumulate and contaminate crops and the food chain. The aim of this study was evaluates the changes in the fertility of dystrophic Red Latosol and in the availability of heavy metals following application of sewage sludge. It was assessed whether organic matter supplied to the soil as large amounts of sewage sludge would decrease availability of heavy metals in the soil due to of insoluble compounds formation. From this, an...

Microbiological and biochemical properties of an agricultural Mexican soil amended with sewage sludge Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Armenta,Renato; Vaca,Rocio; Lugo,Jorge; del Aguila,Pedro.
The application of sewage sludge is a concern because it may affect the quality of organic matter and microbiological and biochemical soil properties. The effects of surface application of sewage sludge to an agricultural soil (at 18 and 36 t ha-1 dry basis) were assessed in one maize (Zea mays L.) growing season. The study evaluated microbial biomass, basal respiration and selected enzymatic activities (catalase, urease, acid and alkaline phosphatase, and β-glucosidase) 230 days after sewage sludge application and infrared spectroscopy was used to assess the quality of dissolved organic matter and humic acids. Sewage sludge applications increased the band intensity assigned to polysaccharides, carboxylic acids, amides and lignin groups in the soil. The...

Modelling the risk of nitrate leaching from two soils amended with five different biosolids Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Corrêa,Rodrigo Studart; White,Robert Edwin; Weatherley,Anthony James.
High N concentrations in biosolids are one of the strongest reasons for their agricultural use. However, it is essential to understand the fate of N in soils treated with biosolids for both plant nutrition and managing the environmental risk of NO3--N leaching. This work aimed at evaluating the risk of NO3--N leaching from a Spodosol and an Oxisol, each one treated with 0.5-8.0 dry Mg ha-1 of fresh tertiary sewage sludge, composted biosolids, limed biosolids, heat-dried biosolids and solar-irradiated biosolids. Results indicated that under similar application rates NO3--N accumulated up to three times more in the 20 cm topsoil of the Oxisol than the Spodosol. However, a higher water content held at field capacity in the Oxisol compensated for the greater...

NO-LINEAR RESPIRATION DYNAMICS IN A DEGRADED ALFISOL AMENDED WITH DIFFERENT DOSE OF SALMON SLUDGES J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Celis,J.E; Sandoval,M.A; Bello,N.
No research has been conducted regarding respiration model parameters as a consequence of the application of salmon sludge on degraded Alfisols. In order to investigate kinetic parameters representing the decomposition of salmon sludge by means of respiration rates, sediment samples from a land-farmed pisciculture and a lake-salmon facility were applied to a degraded Alfisol at the Biobio region (Chile). Soil microbiological activity was evaluated on a 60-days laboratory incubation experiment under different salmon sludge addition dose: T1 25 t ha-1; T2: 50 t ha-1; T3: 75 t ha-1; T4: 100 t ha-1; T5: 150 t ha-1. A non-amended soil served as control. C0(2)-C production was determined in samples under closed incubation. A two-component first-order regression...

Nutritional status and physiological parameters of maize cultivated with sewage sludge Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Moreira,Rodrigo Santos; Lense,Guilherme Henrique Expedito; Fávero,Leonardo Ferreira; Oliveira Junior,Benedito Majela de; Mincato,Ronaldo Luiz.
ABSTRACT The use of sewage sludge as a source of nutrients and organic matter for agricultural soils is a well-established practice. However, few reports highlight the effect of the nutrients and potentially toxic elements provided by organic wastes application on the plant physiological parameters, such as photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductivity. We performed a greenhouse experiment with maize exposed to a dystrophic red Latosol amended with mineral fertilizer and different rates of sewage sludge with the following objectives: i) assess the nutrients and metal uptake translocation and distribution in plants and ii) evaluate the relationship between plant physiological parameters and yield indicators under the study conditions. The application of...

Organic compounds with high Ni content: Effects on soil and strawberry production AGRIAMBI
Roveda,Luís F.; Cuquel,Francine L.; Motta,Antônio C. V.; Melo,Vander de F..
ABSTRACT The use of organic residues can improve soil chemical and physical conditions and plant growth. However, these residues often contain heavy metals that can interfere with growth. Here, a pot experiment was performed to compare the effects of organic compound (OC) containing a high nickel (Ni) load with those of a mineral Ni source (NiCl2, a soluble salt) on the production, quality and nutritional status of strawberry and on soil chemistry. Six dosages of Ni (0, 9, 18, 36, 72 and 144 mg kg-1) were added to the soil using both OC and NiCl2. The use of high-Ni OC resulted in increased productivity and fruit weight, whereas the soluble NiCl2 salt caused reduction in fruit weight. Application of NiCl2 at concentrations >18 mg kg-1 also caused...

Potential impacts of using sewage sludge biochar on the growth of plant forest seedlings Ciência Rural
Silva,Maria Isidoria; Mackowiak,Cheryl; Minogue,Patrick; Reis,Alessandra Ferreira; Moline,Ederlon Flavio da Veiga.
ABSTRACT: Sewage sludge has long been successfully used in the production of nursery plants; however, some restriction may apply due to its high pathogenic characteristics. The process of charring the organic waste significantly reduces that undesired component and may be as effective as the non-charred residue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sewage sludge biochar on the growth and morphological traits of eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus grandis L.) seedlings, and compare results with those observed when using uncharred sewage sludge. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme, with four replications. Charred and non-charred sewage sludge were tested with and without NPK addition. A control treatment...

STRUCTURAL REMEDIATION OF AN ALFISOL BY MEANS OF SEWAGE SLUDGE AMENDMENTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH YELLOW SERRADELA (Ornithopus compressus L.) J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Sandoval,M.A; Celis,J.E; Morales,P.
Wastewater treatment generates large amounts of sewage sludge, which when are disposed in highly degraded soils (with a complete loss of the A horizon and a great part of the B horizon), represent an interesting alternative to recover the aggregate level into soil. Within the hierarchy of soil systems, the aggregate level is the one that integrates soil properties that are directly related to soil sustainability. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different dose of sewage sludge and an annual legume on the structural recovery of a degraded Alfisol. Sludge was added to soil at 0, 15, 30 and 60 t ha-1 in treatments with and without yellow serradela (Ornithopus compressus L.). After 6 months, the following structural indicators were...
